about bamfield
Bamfield originated as an outpost for fur trading and a fishing community in the late 1800s. Shortly thereafter the Pacific Cable Board chose Bamfield as home for their trans-Pacific cable, which has now become the site of the Bamfield Marine Science Center. The small town is situated on the edge of the Pacific Rim National Park and is home to the western trailhead of the West Coast Trail. It is also the location of Kiixin Village National Historic site, the only known traditional Fist Nations village remaining on the west coast of southern B.C.
Bamfield has a west and east side separated by the Inlet. On the west side you will find the Mercantile store, seasonal restaurant and Coast Guard station all situated along the Bamfield Boardwalk. On the east side you will find the Malsit Public House, the Market Cafe, a building supply store, marine supply store and the market grocery store.
